Arree Chung is the founder of Storyteller Academy and a published author and illustrator. After starting out in the world of business consulting, Arree took the leap of faith to pursue his artistic endeavors. He never looked back.

Today Arree lives a creative life making stories for children. Arree spends most of his time making picture books, writing middle grade novels and sharing his love for art, design and storytelling with kids and dreamers everywhere. Arree’s Ninja! Each term, we invite a literary agent and a children’s book editor to share their knowledge with you! You have the opportunity to ask them anything! Replays are available.

WK 0: COURAGE, CREATIVITY & POWER OF WORDS

Before we dive into making stories and the creative process, we first need to address fear, failure and the inner critic. We’ll walk through the mentality and persistence that goes into becoming a published author, as well as examine the creative habits of successful artists.

WK 1: THE CREATIVE PROCESS & ELEMENTS OF STORY

This is where it all begins! You’ll learn about the creative process and the stages of making a book. We’ll review the basic elements of story and dive deep into the structure of picture book stories.

WK 2: LET'S MAKE A STORY

How do you start making a story? You’ll learn the importance of embracing messiness and get over the fear of drawing. We’ll also review the benefits of critique groups and how to be a part of an amazing critique group.

WK 3: THE CREATIVE PROCESS AND PUTTING YOUR STORY TOGETHER

Learn how to use design principles in designing your picture book story. We’ll study characters from classic books and review how the story was built around the character’s problems.

WK 4: MAKING A DUMMY AND CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

With a step-by-step guide, you’ll be able to assemble a picture book dummy. We’ll also dive deep into developing characters and how to make them memorable.

WK 5: DESIGN, FIRST PAGES AND PAGE TURNS

Learn what makes a good first page and how to set up page turns. We'll discuss several types of page turns in detail with case studies and a guide. Arree also discusses page turns in his books.

WK 6: INCITING INCIDENT AND ESCALATION

Learn how to set up your inciting incident and escalate the tension in your story. You’ll learn strategies on how to develop your story. Arree will demonstrate how he works to develop his story ideas.

WK 8: PACING AND REFINING YOUR WORDS & PICTURES

With your picture book dummy built, it’s time to do an audit to see where we can improve. We’ll examine the pacing of the story and look closely at the relationship between words and pictures.

WK 9: REVISIONS, TOOLS AND PRESENTATION

Revise your story efficiently and learn the tools that will help you clean up your drawings to make them presentation ready. We’ll also run through a checklist to make sure that we have a solid story that kids will love.

Gain valuable insights about the children’s book industry. You’ll learn the economics and the numbers behind the picture book industry. Arree also shares what he’s learned and gives good practical advice for planning your career.
