Our March intensive for Makers Self-Study and Makers Pro is “Build an Author Website with Ken Lamug.” We have a sales page up now for anyone else who’d like to purchase it. You should go check out the cool animation at the top of Ken's website.
Ken describes himself as a software/web developer by day and an author-illustrator of picture books and graphic novels by night. He volunteers as the Illustrator Coordinator for our region of SCBWI and facilitates a picture book critique group in Vegas. He also teaches at conferences (like this one coming up in May) and contributes art and articles to the SCBWI Nevada Newsletter. The following masthead is his work:
Ken and I took Arree’s Making Picture Book Stories and Dummies class Spring Term of 2017. We'd never met, and now Ken is probably the Storyteller Academy member I see the most of outside of my computer.
Ken has an interesting body of work. You know how there are some picture books that are really novelty books for adults? You wouldn’t even submit them to a children’s publisher. Ken has some of those. He’s written and illustrated some graphic novels. He’s even been included in magazines like the SCBWI Bulletin and Underneath the Juniper Tree Anthology.
He started out by self-publishing, but Andrea Cascardi of Transatlantic Agency currently represents his work. Ghastly Ghosts comes out this year. If you want to choose this option for the giveaway, I'll just preorder it, and you'll get a nice surprise in the mail later this year.
His most recent book deal hasn’t been announced yet, so I can’t talk about how awesome it’s going to be. But I can share this announcement for a picture book deal with Versify.
Ken’s Intensive and Intensive Review
How many of you know that you should have a website, but you just haven’t gotten around to it? It can feel overwhelming, can’t it? Some agents and editors say that we need a website to show we see ourselves as professionals. Others don’t think you need one until you sell your first book.
In Ken’s intensive, he’s going to walk you through all of the steps of registering a domain name and starting a hosting account with Bluehost. He’ll show you how WordPress can be a powerful tool for building your website. And again, he’ll walk you through the steps of setting up a homepage. You’ll get tips for writing your bio. Then he’ll teach you how to add pages, how to blog, how to create a galley. You’ll learn how to add assets, like text and photos, to a page. He’ll cover more advanced options, like installing a lightbox page gallery and Beaver Builder.
By the time you finish his intensive, you should be able to set up a one-page website in an hour (as long as you’ve gathered your content in advance).
This book giveaway is open to international participants. The winner can choose one book—any book—of Ken’s. To enter, you must tell me which book you’d choose in the comments of this post. For additional entries, you can share the post on social media and post a link to where you’ve shared in the comments (preferably as a comment to your original comment so that all of your entries are grouped together).
Go ahead and ask questions in the comments and interact with each other, but I won’t count those as entries.
I’ll close the contest at midnight PST on March 25 and announce a winner on March 27. Thanks for reading and sharing!
